Italy's nomad visa restricts itself to 'highly skilled' remote workers, but for those who qualify it opens a genuinely renewable path to living in Florence, Bologna, or beyond. No expiry date built in, unlike Japan's or Croatia's.

Italy in short
We cover 2 cities in Italy. A mid-range solo month runs from about $1,900 in Florence to about $2,600 in Milan (our planning estimates, method). The visa tracker has 1 record for Italy, read on official pages and last checked 29 Sept 2026.
Consulate General of Italy in New York page lists the visa with an appointment process; page text refers to 2024 figures, check current amounts
Income rule
The governing decree (Ministry of the Interior decree of 29 Feb 2024, Gazzetta Ufficiale n. 79 of 4 Apr 2024) sets a formula, not an amount: lawful annual income of not less than three times the minimum level for exemption from healthcare cost participation. The lowest national exemption level is EUR 8,263.31 (Sistema Tessera Sanitaria, sistemats1.sanita.finanze.it), so the formula gives EUR 24,789.93, rounded to 24,790 (COMPUTED). Consulate sheets print different figures: New York 24,789 (2024), Valletta 25,500 (3 x 8,500), Tunis embassy sheet of 25 May 2026 'approximately 27,000'. The 27,000 is an unexplained approximation, so ask the competent consulate which figure it applies. Stay
Permesso for digital nomads issued for one year (as stated in 2024 on the consulate page)
Government fee
Consulate General in Paris page (translated): 116 euros, cash. The fee is consulate-specific and adjusts quarterly with the exchange rate (New York page: posted on its own fees page, in USD)
Processing
Varies by consulate: Embassy in Valletta says up to 90 days for remote workers and up to 120 days for digital nomads; Paris consulate (https://consparigi.esteri.it/it/servizi-consolari-e-visti/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero/visti/visto-per-nomadi-digitali-e-lavoratori-da-remoto/) says up to 30 days for remote workers and up to 120 days for digital nomads
Insurance
Travel medical insurance min 30,000 EUR coverage, or Italian policy/affidavit to buy one before registering with the Questura
Tax
No nomad-specific tax rule on the consulate pages read. The Agenzia delle Entrate page on the impatriati regime (art. 5 D.Lgs. 209/2023, from tax year 2024, translated) taxes 50% of qualifying income up to EUR 600,000 a year, for the year of transfer plus four years, but requires a commitment to Italian tax residence for at least 4 years, no Italian residence in the previous 3 tax periods, work performed mostly in Italy and high-level qualification requirements; not shown to apply automatically to visa holders
Sorted from cheapest. Monthly cost is a mid-range solo scenario in US dollars; housing is the accommodation line of the same scenario. Wifi and safety are planning figures, not measurements.
How this page is built: visa rows are read from the audited tracker, which links each figure to an official page and dates the check; city figures are editorial planning estimates (method). Rules change, so confirm with the authority before you apply. Researched from official immigration pages and the site's cost dataset.
