Europe for digital nomads
A growing list of dedicated digital nomad visas, excellent healthcare, and easy regional travel via the Schengen zone (mind the 90/180 rule).
Europe in short
Europe has 25 cities in 15 countries on this site. A mid-range solo month runs from about $900 in Tbilisi to about $3,000 in Barcelona, with a median of about $1,700 (our planning estimates, method). 11 of the 15 countries have a remote-work or nomad route marked open in the visa tracker; 2 (Georgia, Germany) have tracker records but no nomad permit; 2 (Poland, Netherlands) are not in the tracker yet. The visa rows below were read on official pages on 29 Sept 2026.
Visa routes compared
One row per tracker record. Income is the figure as published, in the currency the authority uses (a row marked as our arithmetic applies a published formula); we do not convert it here because exchange rates move faster than the rules. The tracker has fees, processing times and every source.

Sorted from cheapest. Monthly cost is a mid-range solo scenario in US dollars; housing is the accommodation line of the same scenario. Wifi and safety are planning figures, not measurements.

The Schengen clock decides most European plans
13 of the 15 European countries on this site are in the Schengen Area (Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Czech Republic, Italy, Malta, Greece, Bulgaria, Poland, Netherlands). On a short stay, every day in any of them counts against one shared allowance of 90 days in any rolling 180-day window. Moving from Lisbon to Valencia does not start a new count. Georgia and Turkey are outside the zone, with their own entry rules.
A nomad visa or residence permit is what lets you stay past 90 days, and only in the country that issued it. Since 10 April 2026 the EU's Entry/Exit System records entries and exits biometrically instead of by passport stamp, which the European Commission says allows automatic detection of overstays (European Commission, 10 Apr 2026). Count your days with the Schengen calculator, and read how the rolling window works.
Membership source: European Commission, Schengen Area (listed for reference; not reopened for this page, because official hosts were unreachable from our build environment on 2 Nov 2026). Bulgaria has applied the full Schengen rules since 1 January 2025. The EES date comes from the Commission news item, read 29 Sept 2026 for our Schengen guide.
Which base fits which plan
A decision aid built from the two tables above. It uses only the planning-cost estimates and the tracker status; it does not rank quality of life.
- Lowest estimated cost inside Schengen, with an open nomad route: Bansko, about $1,100 a month, under Bulgaria's Digital nomad long-term residence permit (Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria, new Art. 24c) (income rule: About 53,850 BGN a year (our arithmetic from the stated formula)); the statute is confirmed but the nomad-specific procedure is not, see the Bulgaria guide.
- Lowest estimated cost outside the Schengen clock: Tbilisi in Georgia, about $900 a month.
- Long stay without a permit application: Georgia has no nomad permit, but the tracker records a visa-free stay of one full year for eligible nationals, which is the entry regime and not a permit (georgia.travel, checked 29 Sept 2026). See the Georgia stay and 1% tax guide.
- Between Europe and Asia, outside Schengen: Turkey's digital nomad visa asks for 3,000 USD a month (checked 29 Sept 2026).
- Lowest income bar: the tracker's European schemes use different currencies and periods; the lowest-income ranking converts them to euro at a stated rate.

How this page is built: visa rows are read from the audited tracker, which links each figure to an official page and dates the check; city figures are editorial planning estimates (method). Rules change, so confirm with the authority before you apply. Researched from official immigration pages and the site's cost dataset.
