The Tax Authority (AT) page on IFICI, the successor to NHR (art. 58-A Tax Benefits Statute), describes a 20% rate on category A/B income from listed qualifying activities (higher-education teaching and research, qualified posts, highly qualified professions, R&D, startups) for 10 years, for people not tax resident in Portugal in the prior 5 years and not previous NHR beneficiaries (translated). Remote work for a foreign employer is not listed as a qualifying activity on the page read, so no automatic tax break for D8 holders is shown; general IRS residence rules apply
